M-x Occur

Man I love the little things that emacs has built in. Today I read about M-x occur. It lets you provide a regex to matcha against and will then open a buffer with all matches. Even better though is this, move the cursor to the match you want and hit enter to go to that line in the original source file. This is nice if you are working with most markup languages and are not looking to do a simple find and replace.

Emacs is just the best thing in the world

Ultra Edit can do the same thing. You can use a file search through folders and it will show you the line where it is in each file and take you to the file you want when you double click on the result in the results window. I use it for searching for specific error messages in my code.

emacs will also do that as well using grep. The thing I like about the emacs implementations is that when you working in a file and you need to find several instances of something not only do you get a second buffer with the listing that allows you to click, but it also will highlight all occurences in the file your looking at which is a nice visual representation as well. The same works for use with grep I believe. The other thing I like is it's all available from the keyboard so there is no mousing.
